SICK JAMES
Innovator, producer, and turntablist, Sick James has been active in DJ culture for over three decades. Beginning his journey with his mother's vinyl collection in the 80s, his passion for music led him to trade in his saxophone for his first turntable at 16—a decision that would shape his path in the industry.
As the mastermind behind "Skratch Attach" (2021), James created the first motorized controller capable of mixing vinyl, bringing a new approach to DJ hardware capabilities. His innovation continued with the 2024 release of the "Skratch Attach X10," featuring a telescopic extension system compatible with devices like the Rane Twelve and modded Technics DZ-1200's. Beyond hardware, James developed companion software enabling DJs to access effects, sample pads, loop players, and other essential tools, with an iOS version (developed in collaboration with DJ Quartz) currently in beta featuring advanced capabilities like live looping and expanded pitch ranges.
James has shared stages with hip-hop legends including Ice-T, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Sir Mix-A-Lot, and KRS-One, performing at iconic venues from the House of Blues to the Viper Room. His festival appearances include Hiero Day in Oakland (hosted by Hieroglyphics), LA Beer Festival, and Genius Loci. As DJ Recspin, he served as the DJ for Ostrich Head while also producing select tracks. The group's song "Feather" from the album "Shoot The Money," which features James' scratching, has surpassed one million Spotify plays.
His versatility extends beyond turntables—James along with his group "Ostrich head" won the 2006 "YouTube Underground" contest, leading to an appearance on "Good Morning America". James has earned top spots in multiple online DJ competitions and has scratches featuring on various songs by artists such as "Aceyalone", "Kirk Knight" and "On Tilt". His work has reached diverse audiences through "America's Top Model," "Blue Mountain State," and even video games such as "Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004."
Sick James combines musical artistry with technological innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries of what's possible in DJ culture while staying true to the roots of hip-hop and turntablism. His ongoing projects continue to bridge the gap between analog techniques and digital possibilities, creating new opportunities for both veteran DJs and the next generation of music creators.
